Hi there, my name is Jo Ann. I’m glad to be
here to share a tiny bit of my splendid experiences with you.
Please forgive all the grammar mistakes that I could have made.
Well, first of all, I just wanna say: ”Can’t believe this is
true!” For the last one month I’ve been studying at LaSalle
College in AMAZING beautiful British Columbia, Vancouver. This
was a scholarship I won from the competition ”English I’m the
best!” held earlier this year. It’s my very first time studying
abroad, all by myself and far, far away from home. My dad and
some of my relatives were actually pretty nervous about the
trip. But the truth is that I’m not nervous at all but got all
excited about going to study English in such an enchanting place,
meeting different people AND probably find my ideal prince Charming.
Oh COME ON! Just kidding, of course I didn’t find my prince
Charming in such a SHORT time. But I really did meet a lot of
wonderful people and go to a lot of gorgeous places and events,
such as the Aquarium, Stanley Park, Waterfront Park (for the
Caribbean Festival), English Bay (for fireworks), Gastown, Granville
Island, Grouse Mountain, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Metrotown
etc. And the Lonsdale Quay Market and the Pacific Center that
I went pass every day.
|
The weather is cool there and the
laid-back city style is awesome. Spending my Sunday afternoon
at a beach relaxing or just hanging out, taking many buses going
nowhere and doing nothing is nice too. BTW, I would like to
notice you DO NOT miss the delicious ”Tim Horton’s” or you are
a fool. Sorry I can’t write any longer. I’m supposed just to
write 300 words. Maybe I wrote too many unnecessary things or
something. But anyways, I would like to end this essay by telling
you how appreciate I am for these wonderful folks: my nice host
family, organized Joyce and Gary, thank you for making me feel
like I’m at home; dear Eli and Kanako, thank you for showing
me around and taking care of me like big sisters; the cutest
kids in Joyce’s daycare, Aidin, Bryanna and Sebastian, thanx
for all the happiness you guys gave me; incredible Kevin and
sweetest Jodi, thank you for being the greatest teachers, patiently
answered all of my whys; for Weedy, Mai, Risa, Bo-mi, Yoo, Arlette
and Jessica, thank you for taking me as I am and giving me so
many unforgettable friendship and memories!
Ummm…these are the thank-you list, sorry for making it kinda
long here but I think it’s really necessary. Thanx again to
all the people that I did and didn’t mention who helped me achieve
my dream studying in Canada and even made it means so much more
and better for me. I couldn’t have done anything without you.
Thanx A LOT and love ya all!!! |

July 22, summer, 2004. I was on a trip to Canada.
It was my first time going studying abroad by myself. I was
so nervous and excited when I left for a foreign country which
is on the other side of the earth. I was going to face a totally
different environment: the language, people, and cultures there.
What would happen in the following 32 days? I didn’t know, and
I didn’t want to take any guess. I just looked forward to anything
which would come to me.
Toronto, the city I was going to stay for four weeks, welcomed
me with its beautiful night view. It was late when I arrived
my homestay. My homestay mother, Muntaz, is a nice single lady.
She lives in a fine community. She loves gardening. It’s her
routine to get up in early morning and water her garden.
|
 |
There are lots of plants in her
yard: flowers, eggplants, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuces, peppers,
and so on. Vegetable-picking is the funniest thing to do in
her garden. She showed me the beauty of Toronto. I used every
moment to experience this city.On the first Monday after arriving
there, I went to my school, ESC, a private language school in
Toronto. It takes only a floor in a building. It’s not a big
place, but I met students there who came from ten different
countries. It was amazing for me to met people from Europe,
South America, Middle East, and Asia in a small space. It’s
just like a mini global village. Moreover, we had many interesting
activities in school. Not only students, but teachers, even
school staffs and directors can learn things while having fun.
It is really a good atmosphere for learning. Everyone exchanges
their experiences, their languages, and their cultures. Everyone
treasures the time of being together. I love this school.
I really enjoyed the time in Toronto. In this English environment,
I learned English without consciousness and stress. What I got
is happiness only. I keep believing that it is the best way
for people to learn foreign languages. Staying in the native-speaking
countries and experiencing the surroundings in person. Believe
it or not! You definitely can get more than you expected. In
this trip, the best souvenir for myself is the unforgettable
experience. I keep this wonderful memory in my photo album and
my mind. How is my trip to Canada? It was incredible! |

Reflection
For Studying Abord
I love the muticulture in PGIC and learn a lot from it. In
PGIC, students come from all over the world, such as from
Brazil, Korea, Japan, Turkey, Mexico, Arab, etc. I not only
have chance to practice English with them but get to know
their traditional culture. For example, in Arab, a man can
marry four wives. Furthermore, I experienced how to learn
English and have good interaction with teacher in an interesting
ways, such as games, discussion, and presentation. Hence,
with lots of outstanding classmates , I knew my English still
have lots of room to impove. My speaking ability still needs
to boost for sometimes I can hardly make myself understood.
When it comes to my writing skill, after having TOEFL class,
score 3 really frustrated me a lot. ( The highest score is
6). Besides, the school offers various kinds of outdoor activities,
such as Rockie Mt., Victoria trip, and Science world.... I
made efforts to open my eyes to this beautiful country, and
I did it . I enjoyed myself a lot, and not only played but
learned to my heart's content. All in all, what makes PGIC
a good place to study ?-----Its muticulture, best teachers,
and extracurricular activies. |

Amazing!

(Part I)
Studying in Savannah College of Art and Design has been the
most charming experience so far in my life. Our curriculum started
on July 26. Because of the wide and huge campus, we have to
take an ESL-Special shuttle bus from our dorm to our main classroom.
Our classrooms are in the Crites House, where the ESL classrooms
and the department of minor dance. The Crites House was originally
the meeting place of Martin Luther King for civil rights movement.
Is it unbelievable? Our teacher absolutely had been in the classroom
before we guys went to the assigned classroom.
Almost everyday our ESL classes were combined with workshops,
field trips and social or cultural activities. We also have
all kinds of trainings in listening, speaking, writing outline
and reading asasignment. We need to keep writing daily journal
to maintain our writing ability. What's more, we also learned
geeting culture, educational culture and value, banking, video
film English, novel reading, cooking, web- site design and presentation
making. The teachers usually break us into two groups so that
we can learn more by the small-sized class. Sometimes, the teacher
will give you the personal teaching on pronunciation and writing.
We also have some program in real experiencing, like... we went
to the video film department to study movie and produced a 5-minute
film by ourselves. Another kind of studying is field trip. We
had toured the Savannah river to study history of economy, plantation
and buildings. On the same trip, we went to different squares
in Savannah and some famous haunted house. Recently, we went
to the local Ogeechee river with the ISSO officers and ESL teachers
for boating. We can learned a lot of terms by doing the activities
that ESL planed. So... study in SCAD is kind of enjoyment in
the exotic city. Isn't it?
Do you really consider that's all for our program? NO! Don't
forget that we have regular evening outing at Thursday and Saturday
night. Alternatively, the outing is a more relaxed class for
us. We went to Star Castle to do roller-skating with our classmates
and American children. You cannot imagine how excellent the
children's skills were. As for me, I had fallen down the floof
for countless times. We went to theater to watch the new movie"
THE VILLAGE", and we did memorize some useful words and
conversations. To conclude, studying here is really a exciting
experience. I look very forward to something that haven't happened!
I've been in Savannah for more than one week. The trip from
Taiwan to the United States was pretty long for me. I take the
airplane from Taiwan, transfering through San Francisco and
Atlanta. When I arrived at Savannah airport, Jessica Dunn, an
school office advicer, came to pick me up. We talked a lot when
we were at the baggage claim waiting for my suitcase. She said
I was the first ESL student they pick up this summer vacation,
and she was also impressed that I can talked with her for long
time. Then she drove me to the campus, which covers all the
downtown of Savannah, and we got to my dormitory, Weston House.
I think the dorm is well- equiped and big enough to share with
3 students. And we are very lucky that we don't have to share
a public bathroom with other students. Because of the time difference,
I felt sleepy all the day and couldn't tell aprat from day and
night. To begin with, I couldn't get familiar with the surrounding
here, but my Resident Assistant, Cortney Cordon, took me to
the other portion of the dormitory and campus. She even took
me to a burger store to have dinner because I didn't know where
to get something to eat.The next day, my ESL teachers, Robyn
and Karen dropped in my dorm and gave me a Chinese foods dilivery
phone call. They are really my resecuer for I can't adapt to
the foods here. Actually, there are many asian restaurants located
on the main streets, composed of Korean, Taiwanese, Hunan, Suchun
and Japanese. I like Chao's because their flavor is much closer
to Taiwan.
(Part II)
July 23 was our ESL check-in and orientation. By July 23, almost
the ESL students had lived in their dorms, and I met my Korean
roomate, Jin Woo Kim before we went to the orientation. He's
26 years old and he can't believe I am just 17 years old. We
redezvous in the Turner House meeting room. We have 11 students
in my class, they are from Hong-kong, Korea, Span, Dominigo
and Taiwan. Most of them are from Korea. We also met Karen and
Robyn there. Plus, the International Student Office adivisors,
Jessica and Nicole came to help us to cope some documents also.
I feel very warm in the campus since people here liked to help
you whenever you need, and the relationship between each other
is cooperative. After dilivering ourselves introductions, we
got to know the students gradually. To everyone's surprise,
I am the yougest student in my current class. They will be attending
the graduated school in fall. After the orientation, we had
a small trip to our campus and Cortney told everyone where to
go and where NOT to go. The Savannah College of Art and Design
has a very sound and responsible secriuty team to protect all
the students that live in dorms. So we don't have to worry something
bad happen. Evevryone said the SCAD has sound students' equipments.
We have a huge computer lab, swimming pool, gym, Cafe',store
and clothes washing area. I admire the school very much for
they provided us with sound basic equipments. We all had bruch
at SCAD Cafe', we shared our personal experiences to others
and tell them about what's new in our country. In that afternoon,
we went to Bank of America, the biggest bank in the US, to open
our check-in and saving account. They are all free for students
to open, and we also learned a lot about banking culture in
the US. From this, you can see that our ESL classroom is everywhere,
not a dead classroom. Afterwards, we had a BIG pizza party in
the lobby of our dormitory with all the ESL instructors and
the office staff. According to what I feel, the pizza here is
more awesome than Taiwan's. You can have all kinds of flavors
in the US. The office decorated the lobby with balloons so that
we can be at home. After finising eating, we went to the BIGGEST
shopping mall in Savannah, Wal- Mart to purchase some neccesities
for ourselves and the dorms. All the students and instructor
went shopping crazy, and this is my first time shopping in the
US. The feeling is really unforgettable. At Saturday night,
we had regular outing with Cortney to the Oglethorpe Mall( known
as O-Mall) to continue our shopping neccesity. (Ogletgorpe is
the first british general that design Savannah). During the
period, all the class was like a big family.
After taking the whole week ESL classes, I have completely
been familiar with the studying requirement, classmates and
the professors. The syllabus for this week is very full and
entensive! On monday, we took the "Terminology"
class with our ESL director, David Edwards. He taught many
terms related to cutural and art with us and also told us
about some famous e-dictionary web-sites in the US so that
we can learn any terms from it! That does really help us realize
the usage of a specific word. As ESL students consist of students
from other countries, we have a regular American class cuturak
class to help those students that will attend the universities
adjust the American class customs. During the class, we all
studied text book and discussed our own school's studying
cutural. Another part of campus study is to know how to use
the library in US. Almost the libraries in the US have wide
services and internet catalog searching. We had to know how
to find a book in a short time. Also, we learned many new
words in the real library. SCAD's library is a very big sample
that combined with museum and many book stacks. ESL department
also planned some Workshops for us, which were too interesting
to describe how they were. We went to one of the halls to
learn "Glass Etching." The professor taught us the
skills of etching some pictures you like on the glass. I also
made a funny glass with some fish on it. Some of my classmates
did a very good job that etched a character of cartoon on
it!
(Part III)
Since Savannah is a very old city and known as the first city
of Georgia, there are many squares and ancient galleries located
in the downtown. Two professors and us went to the ocal Telfair
Musuem to behold some famous works and status. Telfair Museum
was a rich man's house in 1820s, and it was bought to display
some American artists' works afterwards. In the lobby of the
hall, you can see a very famous statu that you might have
seen in the novel called " Midnight in the Garden of
Good and Evil." The novel was written about a real murder
in Savannah. And the picture of the statu was printed in the
first page of its catalog. It looks very mysterious and unusual
because the value of the statu was not very bright and the
girl's manner seemed to express the mystery. In the biggest
hall, you can see many paitings that was drawn for the American
civil war. Throuigh the guide's introduction, we learned many
terms to describe an art work. The professor had us make a
presentation of our favorite art work in the museum with using
the terms we learned there. I think all my classmates are
so professional that can make a presentation like a lecture.
Tell you a secret. Most of them are graduate students, and
they graduate from some top colleges in their countries. Their
mojors include paiting, sequential art, graphic design, fashion
and fiber. One of my classmate, Sun Hwa, has been teaching
Craft Art in the universities in Japan and Korea for over
eight years. Meanwhile, she's hosted many individual exhibition
in New York and Japan. I was really impressed by her and them
very much. I thnk I will try to learned more from them!
The essential part of this week is that we went to Tybee Island
with school adviser, Nicole and Jessica, for 3-day relaxed
trip. We lived in a very big and well- furnished house with
a big porch. We guys were really exciting because of the big
house and the charming beach. During the weekend, we usually
go to the beach to take some activities like... sand castle
and beach volleyball. Beside, we also exposed our bodies to
the killing sunlight for a couple of hours. Luckily, no one
got sun burn. At night, we all went outside to enjoy the wave
sweeping our face and watch the awesome stars in the sky.
Since I was born, I've never have had such a blissful experience.
I was really happy that I can come here for both studying
and enjoyig the nature! I love it!!

(POT LUCK)。
Johnson’s and Wales’ University (J&W) in Denver is a small
but beautiful campus. It has five colleges, including culinary,
hotel management and etc. The ELS center I studied at is located
in the Student Union of (J&W). The facility is impeccable
while the faculty is kind and cares for the students very much.
Before the class starts, ELS will hold a placement test. There
are twelve levels in ELS and about 10 students will be in the
same class. The intensive course starts from 9 AM to 4 PM from
Monday to Thursday, and to 1 PM on Friday. I was in the master
class and the course was about college preparation. We did not
have fixed textbooks but we used English novels, magazines and
TOEFL books. With several presentations, watching movies and
group discussion, my English ability has improved a lot.
I lived in the dormitory of J&W. It is very safe because
you need to let the machine scan your palm and key in the key
word in order to open the gate and the room door. My roommate
Takahashi Miho is also 18 years old and she is a very lovely
Japanese girl. There were a television, a refrigerator and a
microwave in our room, and we had the access to Internet and
make phone calls. Life in the dormitory was very convenient
and comfortable. There were always many J&W students and
neighboring residents picnicking and exercising in the campus.
ELS also held various kinds of activities such as brought our
students to the gathering of the neighborhood and potluck for
student to enjoy food from every country together. I could have
many chances to practice speaking English and make new friends
by simply staying at the campus for an afternoon.
From Monday to Friday, because I studied hard and I had a lot
of homework, I stayed at the library or multi-media lab to write
my reports. I also chatted at the lounge with my friends in
the Student Union. On Weekends, I usually went sightseeing by
bus or by my friends’ car. It takes only half an hour from J&W
to downtown. It only takes about an hour to go to the Rocky
Mountain National Park from J&W, too. The Sixteenth Street
in downtown is my favorite spot because tourists can take a
ride of the free shuttle buses and shop along the street. I
can find every thing from dedicated aboriginal art craft to
famous brand clothing there.
Four week English course ended soon. Because I had to transfer
at LAX, I decided to make the best of my time to sightsee in
L.A. I stayed at the Youth Hostel near the Third Street Promenade
for two nights. Besides shopping and watching the street performances
along the Third Street Promenade, I also went to the spectacular
Santa Monica Beach to take a sun bath. Also, I went to Universal
Studio to celebrated birthday for my new friend, a British boy
I met at the Hostel, and we had a lot of fun. The one month
study tour to U.S. was really wonderful and I am truly grateful.
Thank you Oh! America, ELS and J&W for giving me this valuable
chance to experience American life style, to learn English and
have fun at the same time! |

A month in Canada
Last few weeks, I entered a tournament of OH AMERICA and OH
CANADA. I was very lucky to win the contest and so I got the
chance to go to Canada to study for a whole month.
It was an exciting thing to take an airplane all by myself,
I felt like growing from a boy to a man! After I got to the
Nanaimo Airport, I met my home stay parent, she looked very
kind, and her friends were very nice to me too, it was great
to meet friendly people in an unfamiliar country.
Unlike my home in Taiwan, their house was so much bigger then
ours. There were frond yard, back yard, basement, plants every
where I can see. I didn’t explore much on the first day, because
when I got there, it was 2 in the morning.
The time differences were not a big trouble for me, I got used
to the time there after a day or two. The next day, my home
stay mom, Debbie, showed me around the house, and taught me
how to take the buses in Nanaimo. After a few days, I found
out the buses became a very important transportation for me
to play in Nanaimo. There was a mall next to the place I live;
it also became a very important place for to hang out after
school. Nanaimo is a nice little town where everybody is friendly
and nice, a town where the view was not high towers or buildings
but trees and flowers. The environment was very clean, and it
was not often to see trash on the streets.
The four weeks in Nanaimo, I made friends from Korea, Japan,
Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, and all kinds of places. It was great
to listen to them talking about their own cultures, and talking
about their lives in other countries. I didn’t only learn about
Canada but also learned many other cultures.
This trip to Canada was a trip of my life time. It was a great
experience for me; I can never learn these in Taiwan. As people
say, “reading ten thousand books will never be as good as traveling
ten thousand miles. Thank you, OH CANADA. For giving me this
chance to see the world in my own eyes. |
