Introduction
The 1st series of events under the moniker of the Canadian and American University & High School Education Expo was hosted by the Oh Canada / Oh America Education Consulting Centers from June 30th to July 28th. The events had a high number of school participants and student attendees making it the most successful and the largest overseas education event in this summer Taiwan.

Event Review

  1. Canadian/American University and High School Expo, Taipei July 22nd

  2. Date: July 22nd, 11:00~19:00

Venue: The pedestrian mall in-between the Vieshow Warner Village Cinema outside the World Trade Center Hall Two in downtown Taipei.

Content: This was the first time a study-abroad organization has been given approval by the Taipei City Government to do this! Twenty-eight booths and a stage area were set up on the mall. The booths were divided by different types of schools: colleges/universities/high schools, and by country. On the same day, the domestic university fair took place inside the TWTC, Hall#2, so the turn out was very high. On July 19th the results of the local university entrance exam were released and students were all there looking for information on possible study options. We cooperated with the only English radio station in Taiwan ICRT with the on-site live show and over 130 spots of radio ads of the Event.

  3. Outdoor Displays promoting studying in Canada and the United States, Taipei July 21st/22nd

  4. Date: July 21st 10:00~July 22nd 18:00

Venue: The pedestrian hall in front of the Mitsukoshi Department Plaza in downtown Taipei

Content: The Taipei City Government also granted permission to use the pedestrian mall in the downtown shopping core. A 50-meter space was used to erect 20 display panels (3x3M) introducing the different aspects and advantages of studying in Canada and the United States. Our center staffed and answered questions and passed out information.

  5. Street party and Charity Event in Taichung and Kaohsiung: June 30th, July 14th, 21st and 28th

  6. Date: June 30th and July 14th in Kaoshiung, July 21st and July 28th in Taichung

Venue: Outdoors in front of the City Film Library, and department stores.

Content: Oh Canada/Oh America joined the CTOT National Day Festival and two major radio stations in Taichung and Kaohsiung for their main summer event and promotion. We had four 3x3 M booths at these four events and delivered study abroad information. In addition, to the event itself, the organizers purchased over 300 radio ad-spots from these stations.

Conclusions and Recommendations

¡@
  1. The timing of these events was excellent to respond to students¡¦ demand after the local joint university entrance exam.

  2. The weather proved to be somewhat problematic. While being outdoors attracted more students, the heat and humidity was extremely high; thus discouraging some students from coming or staying longer if they came. For future events it should be considered to hold them indoors or start later in the day when the heat cools down.

  3. A joint-promotion model can be used again to cooperate with the local media for their summer activities.

  4. Promotions should start earlier to reach the kids in schools before summer vacation.

  5. In addition to attracting students, the event and its promotions should also focus on people in the work force interested in upgrading their skills.

  6. A more suitable location must be found for the outdoor panel display. The heat kept many people from reading the displays. Possibly more focused events should be set up on local campuses with only a portion of the panels displayed to meet the needs of the particular campus.

  7. In the future, efforts should be made to invite more school delegates to participate.

  8. Printing services for school materials will be offered to allow schools to avoid shipping costs and the risk of lost shipments.

  9. The summer events can continue and should be expanded to reach similar levels as the spring and fall events currently organized by the Oh Canada/Oh America Center.
