Taiwan Post-Secondary Workshop

Note: This event is held once a year in the Spring

Overview

Over the past decade Taiwan has being conducting a major reform of its education system from the elementary to graduate studies level. The reforms are very ambitious and seek to transform a vocational and applied education system into a more comprehensive system able to prepare students for Taiwan's transition into a service and high-end manufacturing economy. Some of the notable changes include the introduction of English language learning into elementary schools and the addition of more foreign languages into the secondary school system, including French and Japanese. Many junior/technical colleges have been transformed into four-year degree granting colleges, and there has been many new universities established. Capacity on both the undergraduate and graduate level has mushroomed with colleges and universities attempting to increase their enrollment.

Many challenges have been faced with the reform. The transition from vocational/applied education to academic-based programs has left schools scrambling to fill gaps in their curriculum and qualified personnel to deliver the new programs. Moreover, schools have had to change from a passive to an active recruiting format to attract enough students to reach enrollment capacity. Many school are looking to establish dynamic international programs to attract local students.
