Located in the east of Taiwan, Tzu Chi
University was established in 1994 by Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu
Chi Foundation, on the conviction that education is not only to impart
knowledge, but to educate character. TCU, providing an environment of
kindness, compassion, joy, and unselfish giving, emphasizes the art of daily
living as well as skillful and wise handling of interpersonal relations and
affairs. Students learn and study according to their interests on a safe and
beautiful campus. By harboring Great Love, TCU hopes that students will enjoy
life during their stay and after graduation.
Currently, TCU has 4 colleges; Medicine, Life Sciences, Social Sciences
& Humanities and Education & Communication with 12 undergraduate and
21 postgraduate programs (18 for Master and 3 for Doctoral).
In the future, TCU will actively make every endeavor on international
academic exchange and cooperation and extend partnerships with world top
universities in order to raise the international competitiveness.

Extracurricular activities (75 words)
There are 43 student organizations on campus.
The university encourages these organizations to participate in public
service so that students can learn proper interpersonal communication
skills.
Students gain knowledge from lectures and apply their school
learning in their daily lives. Freshmen are required to perform at least ten
hours of community service in a medical setting or charity foundation in
Hualien. Students’ community service hours are recorded in a “community
service passport”—the testimony of Tzu Chi’s Great Love. By practicing
community service, students gain a better understanding of human life and
develop wisdom through giving.
